Timeline
Thursday | December 3
11:00 AM | Bring your dough, talk about the tradition, and braid Challah with Elisheva Apple and Lori Cooper. (If you would like a Challah for Shabbat this week or if you would like to bake extras to be donated please let us know below.

Bread Machine Challah Recipe
A. 3 whole eggs plug one egg see “L”
B. 1 cup water room temp
C. 2 tbs olive oil
D. 1 tbs Barley Malt Syrup (Head Nut)
E. ½ tsp Vanilla extract
F. 5 c. Bread Flour (King Arthur)
G. 2 tbs sugar (on top of flour – separate corners)
H. 2 tsp salt (on top of flour – separate corners)
I. 2 ½ tsp yeast (or one package – make sure it is fresh)
J. Raisins optional
K. Sesame or poppy seeds optional
L. One egg to beat and apply for glaze
M. Corn Meal to line baking sheet to prevent sticking
The ingredients go into your bread machine in the order that they are listed. Make sure to put the salt and sugar in separate comers with yeast in middle. Set your bread machine on the dough setting #9. When dough is ready a small piece, about the size of an olive is “taken” from the dough. This piece is not eaten rather it is thrown into the oven as a reminder of the offering that the Jewish people gave to the Kohanim (Priests), during the days when the ancient Temple existed.
(Insert Bracha here)
The egg is mixed up and used to paint the challah after it has been braided or some other “design” is made. Sesame or poppy seeds, or cinnamon and sugar or sprinkles (for kids!) goes on next.
Bake in a 350-degree oven for about 1/2 hour or until top of challah is brown.
You’ll be tempted to eat the challah now but try to save it for your Shabbat meal!
