The centrality of the “land of Israel” predates Judaism.  Love of Zion is an integral part of our religion, the hope that sustained Jews in the Diaspora for 2000 years.  The State of Israel is no longer a dream, but a member of the family of nations.  Unfortunately, the hatred that nearly succeeded in ending the dream and exterminating the Jewish people still exists.  It is not enough for us to end the Passover seder with the pledge, “Next year in Jerusalem.”  Our love for the state of Israel needs to be matched by action and education.
