Mitzvah Opportunities

 HELP FOR CHILE

As everyone knows, there was another cataclysmic earthquake, this time on February 27, in Chile. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We know that many members of our affiliated congregations will want to donate to earthquake victims in Chile as they did for Haiti. This time, USCJ is collecting money, together with Masorti Olami. Masorti Olami is the umbrella organization for Conservative synagogues across the world outside North America and Israel . (There are six Conservative/Masorti shuls in Chile.) To donate, you can click on: Network for Good

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

VOSH - Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity is collecting used eyeglasses which will be sent to Haiti. Help make a difference in the lives of the Haitian people by donating eyeglasses no longer needed. A box will be in the synagogue lobby for all donations.

Federation's Mitzvah Food Project's
Annual Chametz Food Drive & Passover Fundraiser

As you probably know, a growing number of people in our community are in need of nutritious food. In the past year, the Mitzvah Food Project (MFP) has seen a 4% increase in the number of households served by our food pantries, and this percentage is continuing to increase this year.

Chametz Food Drive
Gather your chametz -- food prohibited during Passover -- for families and households in need and bring it to one of the drop-off locations between now and Monday March 22, 2010.  The chametz will be distributed to the Mitzvah Food Project families and households in need after Passover.

Passover Fundraiser
With your help, we'll include a $10 supermarket gift card with every MFP Passover food package. Because of the increased cost of food for Passover, our goal is to provide extra support for our clients during the holiday.  With your donation of $10, you can ensure that those in need have a little extra as they celebrate Passover.

For additional information, click on Mitzvah Food Project

JTS is privileged to introduce you to its
Director of Israel Programs, Rabbi Matt Berkowitz,
as he discusses
The "State" of Israel: Democracy or Theocracy
With the recent freeze of construction on settlements in the West Bank, tension has risen between the religious and political leaderships of Israel. One rabbi of a hesder yeshivah (committed to army service) even called on his students to resist any evacuation orders or commands to dismantle settlements. How is modern Israel to wrestle with this tension? Much of this debate is rooted in disparate ideas of the nature of the Jewish State. What are some of the competing visions of the modern State of Israel? Is Israel simply a "State for the Jews" or is it a "Jewish State"? And if it is a Jewish State, whose "Jewish" is it?

Ed and Barbara Berkowitz
cordially invite you to join them for this special evening
Thursday, March 11, 2010
7:30 p.m.
506 Oak Terrace, Merion, PA 19066

Please RSVP to Rickey Goodman at  rigoodman@jtsa.edu or (215) 376-0474 by Monday, March 8.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Scrapbooking Club Sundays at Martin's Run Senior Care Community. 2-3:30 PM Students can come as often as they can; once, twice or as many Sundays as they would like to give in a month. Most students come with a parent (and the parent participates as well). This is a GREAT multi generational Jewish experience.  Excellent opportunity for students looking for Mitzvah projects or high school students looking for community service.
